Clifford Chance Hong Kong: Redefining Workspace Design

A Fresh Face for a Prominent Law Firm

Clifford Chance, a leading law firm located in the iconic Jardine House in Hong Kong, has recently undergone a transformative redesign of its workspace. Spearheaded by the innovative design team at Circa ia, the project aimed to bring a fresh and modern aesthetic to the firm's interior, while also enhancing functionality and promoting collaboration among its staff.

The design team drew inspiration from two main sources. Firstly, they sought to highlight the iconic round windows of Jardine House, paying homage to the building's architectural significance. This was achieved through the use of exterior finishes and panel divisions that echoed the distinctive features of the building. Secondly, the team aimed to create spaces that fostered connectivity and collaboration among the staff. To achieve this, each of the four floors was given a unique identity through the incorporation of hand-made wallpapers from renowned artists such as Paperflavor, Camilla Meijer, Eco, and Walnutwallpaper.

One of the standout features of the redesign is the newly developed glazing with concealed sliding office doors. This innovative technology allows the harbor light to permeate the workspace, creating a bright and open atmosphere. Additionally, custom storage solutions and high-performance sit-stand desks were introduced to prioritize ergonomics and ensure the well-being of all staff members.

To further promote a sense of community, a central pantry was developed on each floor. These well-designed spaces serve as social hubs, encouraging interaction and collaboration among the staff. The project also included the installation of an internal staircase, connecting the four floors and providing both cohesion and individuality through the use of custom timber slating and unique wallpapers.

The realization of the design involved overcoming several challenges. The most significant of these was the creation of glass doors that seamlessly blend into the wall system, effectively transforming them into open spaces unless confidentiality is required. This required collaboration with a glass wall system company to develop a door that could slide away and no longer be perceived as a traditional door.

The Clifford Chance Hong Kong redesign project spanned 50,000 square feet and took one year to complete in four phases. The result is a workspace that not only embraces natural light and connectivity but also reflects the firm's commitment to providing a modern and collaborative environment for its staff.

This outstanding design project has been recognized with the prestigious Bronze A' Design Award in the Interior Space, Retail, and Exhibition Design category. This accolade acknowledges the innovative and creative approach taken by Circa ia in redefining the workspace, incorporating best practices in art, science, design, and technology to improve the quality of life for the firm's employees.
